Why Effective Communication is important???
Communication plays a major role in our day to day life. It’s the process of transmitting messages through one another. Yet it is also noted that many of the problems that arises in the society, organization or even in university life is due the lack of effective communication skills. Improper or unclear communication may leads to a barrier to expose our skills. Hence effective communication is a very important tool to prove our skills to the outside world.
For example, let us look at the example of call centres.Effective communication within limited time to the customers gives the best impression of that particular company or Organization. Recently one of my friends who worked in call centre shared her experience. She was terminated from the organization reasoning that unable to answer the calls in a particular time period effectively. It indicates that she was lacking effective communication skill to satisfy the customer needs on time. Since call centre was mainly based on oral communication process it is essential to have a perfect effective communication skill to deal with the different kinds of customers and also to succeed others attention in the work place. In addition, I am being a science student,I can prove my research work to the public only by publishing either by a written journal or an oral presentation. Hence we find that whatever we do, effective communication is necessary in our daily life progress.
Not only in workplace, even in university life effective communication is essential within friends. University is a place where we meet friends of different cultures and different accents. As my own experience I felt difficulty to follow some friends’ accent at the beginning as most Singaporean friends use singlish accent. On the other hand rather than just transferring verbal messages, almost 93% of communicating messages is meant through non verbal communication cues. Hence it is well important to communicate to others by using the right non verbal communication cues.

  1. As you point out call centre workers have to have excellent skills. They not only have to deal with the different accents of customers and poor explanations of requirements but also try to keep themselves and the customer calm so that they can meet the customer's needs.

This course offers a chance to improve the skills which will be such a good suppport to your future academic work

  3. Hi, I do share the same point of view for the part on “Improper or unclear communication may leads to a barrier to expose our skills”. Just like in an interview, although we may have met or even exceed their expectations on our qualification, we may not get the job because we did not present ourselves well. Even if we have already secured a job, how we are going to get our ideas or our proposal across to our colleagues or external parties depends greatly on our communication skills. Comparing one who does not say much about his proposal and one who mentions about how his proposal is better than the rest and why it should be approved. Clearly, the latter will stand a higher chance of getting his proposal approved.

You mentioned about your friend getting retrenched from a call centre, I also recalled from a friend of mine, who used to work in a call centre. She mentioned that it was very stressful there as whatever they said to the customers were being monitored and recorded. If they failed to satisfy the needs of customers, they would get a “good” scolding afterwards. So, I guess that you are right in saying great emphasis is put in communication skills. In fact, I can say that more than 99.999..% (as there are always exceptions) of jobs would require them to equip with that skills.

P.S: Maybe you want to have a space line between paragraphs next time for better clarity.

Hope you can better understand your friends now! =)

    Cheers,
    Chau
